New Homes Help State Hold Energy Usage Flat During Past 30 Years

April 29, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — California homebuilders today thanked President Obama for recognizing the outstanding job California has done in reducing energy consumption – due in large part to the energy-efficiency of new homes built during the past 30 years.

In an Earth Day speech in Newton, Iowa, last week, the President said California’s example shows the rest of the nation that energy-efficiency is a realistic goal.

“California has shown that it can be done. While electricity consumption grew 50 percent in this country over the last three decades, in California, it remained flat,” the President said. “Now, if California can do it, then the whole country can do it.”

Robert Rivinius, CBIA’s President and CEO, said President Obama shines a spotlight on California’s efforts to reduce energy usage since the first energy codes went into effect in 1983.

“Beginning this year, new homes built in California will be an incredible 50 percent more energy-efficient than homes built under national standards,” Rivinius noted. “California homebuilders have been building the most energy-efficient homes in the nation for over 30 years and it is gratifying that the President has cited California as a model for the rest of the nation.”
