CalVet Secretary Peter J. Gravett and Director Donna Beiter of the VA–GLA were joined by Congressman Henry Waxman and Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky today at the West Los Angeles Veterans Home to welcome the first residents to CalVet’s Veterans Transitional Housing Program.
“CalVet, in partnership with VA, is providing a solution to housing homeless veterans in Los Angeles. Using 84 beds for our Veterans Transitional Housing Program allows us to care for veterans who need housing immediately as they transition from treatment programs back to the community,” said Gravett. “By working with VA, we can offer services that the veterans need to make that transition successful and to help the VA achieve their goal of ending veteran homelessness by 2015.
As part of the 2013-14 state budget, this plan converted 84 skilled nursing beds to domiciliary (independent living) beds. The 84-bed unit began admitting the first residents this week and expects to be near capacity by March 2014. This new facility in the State Veterans Home will free up space in the VA West Los Angeles programs and allow them to bring more homeless veterans into their treatment programs.
