New Building Code Changes to Take Effect on Jan. 1, 2011

-

October 8, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — California’s Building Standards Code will change in 2011, and all development project and permit applications that are submitted to the City of Long Beach on or after January 1, 2011 must comply with the updated code.

The City of Long Beach is hosting a series of free community workshops to provide more information about the changes.

The main changes are the introduction of the California Green Building Standards Code (called CALGreen) and the California Residential Code.

CALGreen will be the first-in-the-nation mandatory green building code and will require all new buildings in the state to be more energy efficient and environmentally responsible. CALGreen will require that new buildings reduce water consumption by 20 percent, divert 50 percent of construction waste from landfills, and use low pollutant-emitting materials, among other provisions. According to the California Air Resources Board, CALGreen will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3 million metric tons equivalent in 2020. CALGreen is Part 11 of Title 24 of the California Building Standards Code.

Locally, the City of Long Beach will continue its to implement the city’s approved sustainability policies already outlined in the Zoning Ordinance, including local green building standards, the Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling program, and bike parking standards. Long Beach is also adopting a new model landscape ordinance to comply with state requirements.

The 2010 California Residential Code will bring California in line with the 2009 International Building, Fire, and Residential Code. The Code will outline standards for one- and two-family dwelling units and town homes, including a key new requirement for residential fire sprinklers in all such dwellings. The City of Long Beach will implement these new state regulations, which will increase fire resistance in homes across California. The 2010 California Residential Code is Part 2.5 of Title 24 of the California Building Standards Code.

The three free community workshops are scheduled as follows:

  • Wednesday, October 27, 5:30 pm
City Council Chambers, 333 West Ocean Blvd.
  • Thursday, November 11, 3:30 pm
Long Beach City College, 4900 E. Conant St., Building 2, Room 234
  • Thursday, December 9, 3:00 pm
Mark Twain Library, 1401 E. Anaheim St., Community Room

Please RSVP for the workshops by calling 562.570.7636 or emailing LBDS (at) longbeach (dot) gov.

Information about additional workshops will be posted online at www.lbds.info. For more information about state-mandated changes, visit www.bsc.ca.gov. Plan review and permit applications submitted to the City of Long Beach by December 31, 2010 will not be required to comply with the updated codes.
