Jackson Design & Remodeling Sponsors LEAD Certification Seminar on EPA’s New Renovation, Repair & Painting Rules

As April 22 Deadline Approaches, Only 6,000 of 300,000 Remodelers Have Received New Certification

San Diego, CA – April 1, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Jackson Design & Remodeling (winner of the 2007 and 2009 BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics) in response to the new LEAD certifications set forth by the EPA, sponsored a certification seminar for San Diego contractors, maintenance workers, painters, electricians and others affected by the new Renovation, Repair and Painting rules (RRP) on lead-safe practices. According to the EPA, to date, only 6,000 of 300,000 remodelers nationwide have received their LEAD certifications, the deadline for which is April 22.

The day-long session sponsored by Jackson Design & Remodeling was led by HomeSafe, a leading provider of Environmental Training in Southern California. As a leader in the remodeling industry, Todd Jackson felt it was important to make the certification class available to other vendors, partners and subcontractors in San Diego. More than 14 companies participated in the certification seminar.

The RRP rule requires renovation workers (contractors, property managers and others who disturb known or presumed lead-based paint) to be trained on new guidelines for handling and disposing of lead-based paint. The rule applies to any work that disturbs painted surfaces in residential houses, apartments and child-occupied facilities such as schools and day-care centers built before 1978. Fines for violating RRP Rule requirements can be up to $37,500 per incident.

“When lead-based paint is removed, the danger lies in the dust particles that result and can contain microscopic metal particles that can be inhaled and cause lead poisoning,” said JDR President Todd Jackson. “The new EPA guidelines extend nationally, the rules already in effect in the State of California. These guidelines are important because they not only protect homeowners, but they also protect the workers whose job it is to safely remove these substances.”
