SACRAMENTO COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE GRAND OPENING OF RAILYARDS ROADS
CEREMONY WILL BE HELD IN HONOR OF NEW CONNECTIONS INTO DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO AND FUTURE SITE OF THE 244-ACRE RAILYARDS DEVELOPMENT
WASHINGTON, D.C. — (RealEstateRama) — All the Railyards roads and bridges will officially open with a celebration this Friday. Congresswoman Doris Matsui, Caltrans, and Downtown Railyard Venture, LLC will join City leaders at a grand opening celebration of the Railyards Roads Friday, August 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The new roads will complete the Central City circulation system by providing close connections to downtown Sacramento, Old Sacramento, the Sacramento riverfront, the River District, and the future site of the 244-acre Railyards urban infill mixed-use development.
The ceremony will be held on the 5th Street Bridge and will celebrate the opening of 5th Street, 6th Street, and Railyards Boulevard. Event speakers will include Congresswoman Doris Matsui, Councilmember Jeff Harris, City Manager John Shirey, Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty, and managing Partner of Downtown Railyard Venture Larry Kelley. Immediately following the ceremony will be the Inaugural Commuter Bike Train.
“Completing theses streets literally paves the way for the opening of an entirely new neighborhood in our downtown and fulfillment of the promise of the Railyards development,” said City Manager John Shirey.
Congresswoman Matsui played a significant role in securing federal funding for the $97 million project, which included local, state, and federal funding.
“Once the terminus of the transcontinental railroad, this site has a long history of serving as a channel for commerce and employment in our region,” said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. “The Railyards is reinventing that historical identity through a diversified development plan that meets the needs of our 21st century economy. With the opening of the 5th and 6th street extensions, as well as Railyards Boulevard, we are linking this exciting planned construction to the downtown corridor and surrounding neighborhoods, while breathing new life into historic property. I’m pleased that with these increased connections, Sacramento will continue to grow in a sustainable, modern, and inclusive way.”
In late 2015, the Sacramento Railyards was acquired by Sacramento-based master plan developer Downtown Railyard Venture, LLC (DRV). DRV is currently updating the 2007 Railyards Specific Plan to incorporate new urban design concepts to mesh with the existing community.
“Opening the roads brings us one step closer to realizing the vision at the Railyards,” said Larry Kelley, Managing Partner, Downtown Railyard Ventures, LLC. “We look forward to transforming the Railyards into a dense mixed-use urban neighborhood that will be embraced by the Sacramento community.”
Once serving as the western terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s, the 244-acre historic Union Pacific site is the largest urban infill project in the country. The site has been the focus of significant public and private investment to pair the Sacramento Valley Station – a mass transit hub – with transit-oriented development. The Railyards will include entertainment, retail, housing, office, parks and open space, hotels, health care facilities and other cultural amenities such as the proposed Major League Soccer stadium.
