Rep. Takano Announces Department of Labor Grant for Homeless Riverside Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 28, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Earlier today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Riverside) announced the United States Department of Labor has awarded $157,000 to the Riverside United States Veterans Initiative.

The grant was announced by the United States Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) with 120 others, which cumulatively totaled almost $29 million. The grants were awarded through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) and will provide more than 14,000 veterans with housing, job placements and other services.

After the announcement, Acting Secretary of Labor Seth D. Harris said, “Military service members and their families have been asked to make tremendous sacrifices for this nation. Although homelessness among veterans has fallen, too many of our heroes cannot find jobs or homes. These grants will provide those who have served our nation with the means to find meaningful civilian employment and chart new directions for their lives.”

“With Riverside County having the eighth largest veteran population in the nation, the Inland Empire must do everything in its power to take care of our heroes,” said Rep. Mark Takano. “This grant will benefit the Riverside United States Veterans Initiative tremendously, and provide veterans not only the services they need, but the services they deserve.”

Background Info:
U.S.VETS is the nation’s largest nonprofit provider of comprehensive services to homeless and at-risk veterans and is dedicated to the successful transition of military veterans and their families.

With 11 facilities in six states and the District of Columbia, U.S.VETS provides vital services such as case management, employment assistance, job placement, counseling, as well as drug- and alcohol-free housing to over 2,000 veterans each day. In a year, U.S. VETS will help 3,000 veterans find housing and over 1,000 veterans obtain full-time employment.
