Pelosi Joins Letters Urging HUD to Act on Housing Voucher and HOPWA Funding
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has joined Democratic colleagues in several recent letters urging federal agencies to release housing and energy assistance funding, according to her office.
In one letter, members asked the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to release overdue guidance on preventing Emergency Housing Voucher funding shortfalls. The lawmakers warned that delays put families at risk of losing rental assistance and becoming unhoused. More than 44,000 vouchers are still in use, including 920 in San Francisco.
In another, Pelosi joined colleagues in urging HUD to release the delayed funding notice for Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) grants and to expedite renewal awards. Her office described HOPWA as the only federal program dedicated to the housing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, and said expiring grants and uncertainty over renewals threaten to interrupt services.
Pelosi also joined 116 colleagues in a bipartisan letter asking the Department of Health and Human Services to distribute Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program funding as soon as possible. The program affects 3,052 households in San Francisco, her office said. The lawmakers warned that repeated delays and high energy costs could leave families without heat or force choices between heating and paying for food, medication or rent.
Why it matters
Renters who rely on Emergency Housing Vouchers and housing providers funded through HOPWA may face uncertainty until the agencies respond. The letters are requests from lawmakers and do not change any program on their own.
