Rep. Roybal-Allard Statement on President Trump’s FY 2018 Budget

-

WASHINGTON (May 24, 2017) – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), the ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s fiscal year 2018 budget proposal:

“President Trump’s budget is a shameful document, stunningly out of touch with our nation’s priorities and needs. By gutting and eliminating important security, infrastructure, education, health, and social welfare programs, the president disrespects the American people, our American values, and our American economy.

“I had hoped the president was using the last few months to improve his ‘skinny budget,’ but unfortunately, this budget goes further in the wrong direction. In the president’s budget, he cuts funding for investments in job creation. He takes away tax credits that help working families make ends meet. He cuts Medicaid funding, endangering health care for low-income families and seniors. He cuts funding for education programs that help middle- and low-income students pursue their dreams. He cuts the Environmental Protection Agency budget by 30 percent, threatening our air, our water, and our climate. He cuts the International Affairs budget by almost 30 percent, starving global health initiatives and jeopardizing efforts to prevent future conflicts. He rips billions of dollars away from the National Institutes of Health, draining lifesaving funding to fight disease and find cures. And for what? So that millionaires and corporations can get big, fat tax cuts.

“As the ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I’m also deeply concerned about this budget’s DHS priorities. President Trump needlessly channels money to a hard-line, hard-right immigration and border security policy. He invests billions of dollars in building a border wall, driving up the detention bed count, and hiring huge new numbers of ICE officers, at the expense of critical programs. These include FEMA programs that protect our ports, our public transportation, and our ability to prepare for, prevent, and respond to terrorist attacks or natural disasters such as an earthquake.

“This deeply disturbing budget is an insult to our American values, and a threat to our American economy and the well-being of the American people. I call on the president and my Republican congressional colleagues to work with Democrats to develop a spending strategy that keeps America safe at home and abroad, treats all individuals with decency and kindness, and offers hope and opportunity to every American.”
