HGA Wins Architectural Design Award for Arts Village at Chaffey College

Los Angeles, CA – May 11, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) has won a 2011 AIA Inland California Chapter Honorable Mention for the School of Visual, Performing and Communication Arts at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The project won in the Institutional/Educational/Civic category.

The 70,322-square-foot, multi-building complex is part of a campus master plan by HGA that envisions an “Arts Village” at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains to consolidate the growing arts programs.

HGA designed the two key buildings in the master plan to enhance campus circulation, site views, and natural light. The larger Art Center, which is used for dance, visual arts and digital media, is strategically oriented as the village gateway on the campus’ northern upper perimeter, with the smaller Music Building along the lower southeastern perimeter. The Art Center is visually open to the campus, allowing passersby to glimpse activities inside through expansive windows and glass bi-fold doors that expand the performance spaces to the exterior. The Music Building, clad in stucco and architectural panels, is more enclosed for greater acoustic and auditory accuracy.

The project included interior and systems renovation of the 2-D and 3-D Studio Arts buildings, midway between the Art Center and the Music Building. Cascading concrete stairs connect the upper and lower portions of the Arts Village.

The jurors praised how the buildings addressed the site plan, particularly noting how the Art Center utilized the bi-fold doors to connect interior instructional programming to the outdoors.

The Arts Village was completed in December 2009.

The jurors included Lance Brown, AIA, President of ENTER-ARC Incorporated; Armando Gonzalez, FAIA, Founding Principal of Gonzalez Goodale Architects; Eric C. Naslund, FAIA, Principal of Studio E Architects; and Cesar Pelli, FAIA, RIBA, JIA, Senior Principal of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects.

The AIA Inland California (AIAIC) is the professional organization for architects throughout western Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The AIAIC Design Awards Program recognizes architectural works that elevate the general quality of architectural practice, establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, and inform the public of the breath and value of architectural practice,

The School of Visual, Performing and Communication Arts previously won an AIA Minnesota Honor Award in 2010 and a Community College Facility Coalition (CCFC) Award of Merit in 2007.
