Federal Grants to Assist Homeless Veterans Obtain Jobs

Washington, DC – June 25, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) is pleased to announce $1,883,606 in federal grants to provide Los Angeles-area homeless veterans with job training and placement assistance to help them succeed in civilian careers.  The grants are being awarded under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.

“As Americans, we are indebted to our veterans for their service to our nation,” Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard said.  “The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program assists our homeless veterans to get back on their feet and re-enter the workforce.  The program is an integral part of our Administration’s and Congress’ continuing effort to honor our men and women in uniform by making sure they receive the benefits they have earned and deserve.”

To assist homeless veterans with reintegration into America’s workforce, the Labor Department is distributing nationwide 97 grants, totaling more than $24 million, through 33 newly selected grantees and 64 current grantees receiving second-and third-year funding.  Homeless veterans may receive occupational, classroom and on-the-job training, as well as job search and placement assistance, including follow-up services.  The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program is the only federal program that focuses exclusively on employment of veterans who are homeless.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said, “These grants will help more than 14,000 homeless veterans across the country find meaningful employment, and they will help ensure that these remarkable individuals never face homelessness again.”

In the Los Angeles area, the following grantees received federal funding under the program:

• $300,000 for the Salvation Army Los Angeles CA Corp (new funding)
• $130,000 for the People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) (new funding)
• $300,000 for the United States Vets Inc., Phoenix Site (new funding)
• $253,606 for the Salvation Army Los Angeles CA Corp (2nd year funding)
• $300,000 for Volunteers of America, LA (2nd year funding)
• $300,000 for the Weingart Center Association (2nd year funding)
• $300,000 for New Directions Inc (2nd year funding)
TOTAL = $1,883,606 for homeless veterans in the Los Angeles area
