Congresswoman Matsui Announces over $350,000 in Federal Funding to Help House Homeless Veterans in Sacramento

-

SACRAMENTO, CA – June 3, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) today announced that Sacramento County will receive $368,568 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) Program. This funding will make 50 housing vouchers available to local homeless veterans through the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA).

“We owe it to our nation’s servicemen and women to ensure that when their service is complete they have a roof over their heads, and these VASH vouchers are a step toward fulfilling that goal. VASH vouchers are a vital resource for our homeless veterans in the Sacramento region,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “This federal award will help many veterans and their families get the stable housing and supportive services they need and deserve.”

Through the VASH voucher program, qualifying Sacramento veterans and their families will be able to choose their housing options. Additionally, the Sacramento Veterans Affairs Medical Center will utilize a portion of the VASH funding to provide case management for veterans, ensuring they receive timely help when needed.

“Sacramento’s courageous veterans and their families are facing difficult times, made all the more challenging when they can’t find a safe, decent place to live,” said SHRA Executive Director La Shelle Dozier. “We’re glad that we will be able to provide these vouchers to help eliminate a major obstacle that stood in their path so that they are able to live more comfortably.”

The HUD-VASH program is a collaborative project between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and HUD. It aims to move homeless veterans and their families into stable housing and provide them with support services to improve their quality of life.
