Congresswoman Laura Richardson Announces $881,808 Grant for Long Beach Housing Authority to Provide Housing for Veterans

WASHINGTON, DC – June 7, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced a grant of $881,808 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) has been awarded to the Long Beach Housing Authority to assist homeless U.S. veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“One of my most important responsibilities is to make sure America keeps its promise to our veterans,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “Thousands of young women and men from the 37th District have risked their lives by going into Iraq and Afghanistan because of the love they have for their country. When they return home, we have an important obligation to make sure their needs are met, so they can enjoy the very ideals for which they fought.”

The grant will allow the Long Beach Housing Authority to provide 275 housing vouchers for war veterans returning from Operation Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The vouchers will be issued to veterans who have been identified as homeless and eligible for HUD-VASH services. Many of the veterans benefitting will be single women and men. The HUD-VASH partnership provides rental assistance under the supportive housing program for homeless veterans as authorized by the United States housing act of 1937.

“This would not be possible without the continued commitment of Congresswoman Laura Richardson and her colleagues who have recognized the need for ongoing supportive services for our veterans,” said Allison King of the Long Beach Housing Authority.

Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook and Signal Hill. She is chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Communications, Preparedness, and Response.
