Applications being mailed for Admission to the Fresno and Redding Veterans Homes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 19, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The new budget recently passed by the Legislature and sent to the Governor includes funding for opening of the new Veterans Homes in Redding and Fresno. In preparation, the California Department of Veterans Affairs has been hiring staff and is now ready to take the first applications for members at the new facilities. The Assistant Administrators for the Veterans Home of California Fresno and Redding and staff will be mailing out the applications this week.

The Department has responded to more than 1500 inquiries from veterans and veterans’ families regarding admission to the new homes. This week CalVet will mail 609 Applications for the Redding Veterans Home and 457 Applications to veterans interested in Fresno. The Fresno Veterans Home will have 300 beds when fully operational and Redding will have 150. Both Redding and Fresno will offer Residential Care for the Elderly and Skilled Nursing Care Available.

“The California Department of Veterans Affairs is grateful that the funding was included in the budget so we can move forward with our mission of serving even more veterans,” stated CalVet Secretary Peter J. Gravett. “Getting these two new homes online and filling the beds at the current homes is a major priority for this department.”

For veterans who have not called and requested an application the admission process is as follows:

  • Veterans can download the application at http://www.calvet.ca.gov/VetHomes/NewHomes.aspx
  • Veterans can apply by mailing or hand-delivering this application to each of the respective Veterans Home
    • FRESNO: 2811 West California Ave, Fresno CA 93706
    • REDDING: 3400 Knighton Road, Redding CA 96002
  • Veterans may also call the admissions office phone numbers with any questions or can pick up an application at the Home.

Veterans who are age 55 or older are eligible to apply for admission. The age requirement is waived for disabled or homeless veterans needing long-term care. You must also meet the following requirements:

1) Served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States, for other than training purposes.

2) Provide proof of military service by submitting a DD 214, or obtaining proof through the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) or the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA).

3) Discharged or released from active duty honorably or under honorable conditions.

4) California resident at the time of application for admission.

1. Note: Medal of Honor recipients, Ex-POW’s and wartime veterans are given priority for admission over peacetime veterans.
