Water-Efficient Landscape Improvements at City’s Transit Maintenance Facility

-

WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 2, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Already a LEED-gold certified site, the City of Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance Facility has completed construction for its Landscape Improvements Project which improves the facility’s landscape and water use.

The water efficiency project accomplished the removal of approximately 55,000 square feet of water-thirsty fescue grass and has replaced it with water friendly, drought resistant shrubs and mulch. The swap will result in an estimated 1.6 million gallons of annual water savings—an estimated 75 percent reduction from the current 2.1 million gallons per year to 515,000 gallons per year.

In addition to removing the grass, the existing overhead rotor irrigation system has been replaced with water-efficient irrigation. To improve irrigation monitoring and allow for centralized control, new smart controllers have been installed. Irrigation bubblers have also been placed to avoid wasteful over spray onto site fixtures and separate irrigation has been installed for trees to accommodate for drought conditions. The facility has also received seven new river rock catch basins to improve site drainage.

Total cost for the construction of this project was roughly $130,000, with an off-set of $50,000 in rebate funds via the Castaic Lake Water Agency’s Large Landscape and Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional Turf Removal Program.

This project is an example of the City’s efforts to improve water use including plans to remove turf on Valencia Boulevard medians, and adding 90 more smart irrigation controllers to the City’s irrigation system. These controllers reduce water use as much as 35 percent.

The City of Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance Facility is located at 28250 Constellation Road. For more information on the facility, please visit SantaClaritaTransit.com.
