Tony Hawk Foundation: Building skateboard parks in low-income communities
November 9, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Five youth from East Los Angeles public housing communities got a rare chance to meet Hollywood A-listers and empower youth in Beverly Hills on Sunday October 17. German Sanchez, Ismael Quesada, Christian Canizales, Anthony Moreno, and Alex Rivera were special guests at Tony Hawk Foundation’s, SHRED Presents Stand Up for Skateparks benefit event to raise funds for a new skate park in Long Beach. The youth met with stars like Chris Tucker, saw a special performance by Janes Addiction band, and got a chance to watch professional skate boarders and BMX bikers during this educational event. In 2009, the Tony Hawk Foundation provided an $80,000 grant to build a skate park in Watts. Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) commends the foundation’s effort to provide youth in low-income areas with productive activities. The Tony Hawk: SHRED Presents Stand Up for Skateparks benefits are made possible through the generosity of Activision’s Tony Hawk: SHRED, Ex Drinks, Wynn Las Vegas, Mondrian Los Angeles, Dynacraft, Quiksilver, Zappos, and T-Mobile USA.
The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. Through special events, grants, and technical assistance, the Foundation supports recreational programs with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities. The Foundation favors programs that clearly demonstrate that funds received will produce tangible, ongoing, positive results.
