HUD Releases FY17 Program Allocations

HANFORD – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) announced California’s Twenty First Congressional District has received nearly $29 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to increase the supply of affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and expand economic opportunity for families throughout California’s Central Valley.

Congressman Valadao stated, “This federal funding will allow our communities to address some of the serious housing, infrastructure, and economic challenges we face today. These programs have proven to be effective in strengthening the Central Valley and positively impacting communities from Fresno to Bakersfield.” He continued, “I applaud the Department of Housing and Urban Development for their continued investment in California’s Central Valley and look forward to ensuring these critical programs receive the resources necessary through my position on the House Appropriations Committee.”

For fiscal year 2017, cities and counties within California’s Twenty First Congressional District, which Valadao represents, received a total of $28,701,009 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the Community Development Block (CDBG) Grant program, the HOME program, the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program.

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs.

The Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) program provides funding to engage homeless individuals and families living on the street; improve the number, quality and operations of emergency shelters for homeless individuals and families; provide essential services to shelter residents, rapidly re-house homeless individuals and families, and prevent families/individuals from becoming homeless.

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to States and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.

The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program provides housing assistance and related supportive services to local units of government, States and non-profit organizations for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
