Pircher, Nichols & Meeks Hires Douglas Merkel As New Associate

Prior to joining Pircher, Nichols & Meeks, Merkel was a research assistant at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where he researched and analyzed health care law and policy. He also spent four years working for U.S. Congressman Henry A. Waxman, where he performed a variety of tasks, including resolving constituent issues with federal agencies, such as U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Department of State. In this position, he also provided immediate assistance to individuals impacted by natural disasters as well as those affected by the economic and housing crises.
Merkel’s experience also includes working for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Community Affairs Department, where he generated revenue for the Dodgers Dream Foundation through fundraising events, helped organize and operate the opening of two Dodger Dream Fields in Boyle Heights and Koreatown, and participated in the planning, organization and operation of the Dodger Youth Baseball Camp.
Merkel earned his J.D. in 2013 from the UCLA School of Law, where he served as a judicial extern for the U.S. District Court’s Central District of California. He was also involved with the Public Interest Law Fund Board as an alumni representative and was a law school ambassador for University Admissions. In addition to his legal experience, Merkel is a volunteer head coach for the UCLA club water polo team, which won national championships in 2009, 2010 and 2013. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a minor in Spanish from UCLA in 2006
