Nickerson Gardens Sage Center Playground Dedication Ceremony
Los Angeles, CA – November 18, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — More than seventy children at the Sage before and after school daycare center will now be able to enjoy a newly renovated playground thanks to the work of The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA).
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa led the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the daycare center which is located inside Nickerson Gardens public housing community. HACLA Commissioner Lucelia Hooper, HACLA President and CEO Rudolf C. Montiel were joined by representatives from Councilwoman Janice Hahn and Senator Roderick Wright’s offices.
“I’m here because I believe in you. This Housing Authority under the leadership of Rudy Montiel, seems to have once every three or four weeks… an opening, a housing development, a new technology initiative, and that takes leadership & that takes commitment. And I want to thank the Housing Authority staff that are here today. Thank you so much.” said Mayor Villaraigosa.
“We’re blessed to have a person that cares about Watts. A Mayor that cares about his entire city, but especially cares about Watts. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been a leader in bringing services and great things to the people of this community.” said HACLA President and CEO Rudolf C. Montiel.
“We’re blessed to have an opportunity to serve the young ones. The generation that follows. As we talk about transforming one neighborhood at a time, we can’t forget that we have kids that need our services today. We found out that this playground was decrepit. This playground needed a little love. And today we’re here and we’re enjoying it one afternoon, but these young children, little boys and little girls will enjoy it every day they’re here.”
The improvements to the playground include:
* Removal of the existing wood structure and sand
* Installation of a new play booster structure for ages 5 – 12
* Installation of approximately 2,200 s.f. of new rubberized playground safety surfacing
“Watts is Worth it,” said HACLA Commissioner Lucelia Hooper. “I can say that because I’ve been a resident of Nickerson Gardens over for 35 years and I’ve seen the good times and I’ve seen the bad times… We have to have a safe environment for our kids and the Sage Center offers that for our parents… We’ve been blessed to have a Sage Center here.”
To date, HACLA has rubberzied 73,000 sq. ft of playground surfacing.
