Mayor Garcetti Breaks Ground on $573 Million Upgrade at LAX

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 14, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor Eric Garcetti today was joined by Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Board of Airport Commissioners President Sean Burton, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey and United Airlines representatives to announce a $573 million upgrade of United Terminals 7 and 8, the latest element of the city’s $7.3 billion public works project to overhaul the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The project will refresh nearly all customer-facing space in those terminals, and will include infrastructure upgrades and a new baggage in-line screening system. The renovation is slated for completion by December of 2017.<span id="more-3380"></span></p> <p>“Today’s investment by United Airlines is the latest in our more than $7 billion overhaul of LAX,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Whether by upgrading 9 terminals, bringing in ridesharing services in to pick you up, or finally connecting the nation’s second busiest airport to rail, we’re making LAX a world-class airport befitting a city that is the global capitol of creativity, innovation and possibility.”</p> <p>“From a state-of-the-art ticketing lobby to a sleek and spacious United Club Lounge, we are enhancing the airport experience at LAX and giving our customers more of what they want when travelling– greater choice and control, consistency and comfort,” said Sandra Pineau-Boddison, senior vice president for Customers at United. “We are grateful to the City of Los Angeles for their partnership on this project, and we remain committed to ensuring this key United hub stays one of the country’s premier global gateways.”</p> <p>The upgrades are focused on improving the customer experience and enabling passengers to get in and out of the airport quicker. Main upgrades of the project include a redeveloped check-in lobby for Premier and Economy passengers; a new 12-lane, 28,000 square foot consolidated security screening checkpoint; a redesign and refresh of 24 passenger hold rooms; a fully renovated baggage claim area; and a new 20,000 square foot United Club with outdoor lounge area.</p> <p>This terminal renovation is part of Mayor Garcetti’s agenda to invest in making LAX a truly world class airport for the more than 70 million passengers that travel through the airport each year, and the more than 44 million people that visit Los Angeles each year. The LAX Modernization Program is creating nearly 40,000 construction-related jobs and pumps $6.89 billion into the local economy. The LAX Modernization Program is funded by LAX operating revenue, terminal concession revenue, airline fees, and airport revenue bond proceeds. No monies from the Los Angeles City general fund are used.</p> <p>About LAX</p> <p>LAX is the fifth busiest airport in the world and second in the United States. LAX served nearly 70.7 million passengers in 2014. LAX offers 692 daily nonstop flights to 85 cities in the U.S. and 928 weekly nonstop flights to 67 cities in 34 countries on 59 commercial air carriers. LAX ranks 14th in the world and fifth in the U.S. in air cargo tonnage processed, with over two million tons of air cargo valued at over $91.6 billion. An economic study in 2011 reported that operations at LAX generated 294,400 jobs in Los Angeles County with labor income of $13.6 billion and economic output of more than $39.7 billion.
