Man Pleads No Contest in Death of Transient Outside Fast Food Restaurant
WASHINGTON, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — A homeless man pleaded no contest today to voluntary manslaughter for the death of another transient outside a fast food restaurant in downtown Los Angeles last year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Derek Miller, 31, entered his plea and is expected to be sentenced to 11 years in state prison on Oct. 18. His co-defendant, Charles Allender, 42, is scheduled to stand trial for murder and assault on Oct. 3.
On Feb. 7, 2015, Allender and Miller are accused of attacking Derrick Hamilton, 45, in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in the 700 block of Cesar Chavez Avenue.
Both Allender and Miller allegedly beat and stomped the victim. Hamilton was taken to a hospital where he died.
If convicted as charged, Allender faces a possible maximum sentence of 32 years to life in state prison.
