Storm in National News |
Known within the insurance industry as repetitive loss properties, the majority of these homes are located in close proximity to the community of Malibou Lake or within local mountain areas where structures are often built too close to streambeds or steep hillsides.
With storm season starting on October 15, engineers from LA County Public Works have visited these repetitive loss properties to evaluate the steps taken by homeowners to reduce their risk of flooding. These and other evaluations are done annually, and a Progress Report for the Floodplain Management Plan is prepared and made available to the public.
Public Works also provides the repetitive loss properties and their neighbors with a copy of flood risk management publications each year to mitigate additional flood hazards and educate the public about flood risk management before storm season begins.
One way to safeguard homes and businesses against flood damage is investing in a low-cost flood insurance policy. Unincorporated area residents currently receive a 15 percent discount on flood insurance premiums.
For information on how to secure low-cost flood insurance, mitigate flood hazards on private property, identify whether you reside within a flood zone, or obtain a copy of the Progress Report for the Floodplain Management Plan, contact Public Works at (626) 458-4321 or visit dpw.lacounty.gov/wmd/nfip.
