GROUNDBREAKING OF AFFORDABLE PUBLIC HOUSING COMMUNITY
One hundred new apartment homes for low- income seniors coming to Wilmington Community
October 5, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today celebrated the groundbreaking of the Dana Strand Senior Apartments, a renovated 100 unit complex that will open in 2011.
“Opening these newly renovated units at Dana Strand moves us closer to fulfilling our promise to ensure our seniors are able to stand on their own two feet and live in a dignified manner even while working on a fixed income,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “We are fully committed to continually working towards our goal of 20,000 affordable housing units Citywide.”
The Dana Strand Senior Apartments that will be affordable to the residents with annual incomes ranging from 30% of the Los Angeles County Area Median Income. The development will consist of three stories of high-quality construction with 82 parking spaces, all of which are built on grade, and will afford easy access to highways 110 and 710. Project amenities will include a computer center, a community room and energy-efficient appliances along with a wide array of resident services, including computer classes, ESL classes, and resident events.
The complex is financed with 4% Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and tax-exempt bond financing, courtesy of the Freddie Mac Credit Enhancement Program. Citi Community Capital and the Los Angeles Housing Department for financial support have also partnered with Dana Strand. Tenants will have access to a number of high-quality features, such as a computer center, community room and energy-efficient appliances, and services like computer and ESL classes, and a multitude of resident events.

Dana Strand is working to achieve LEED for Homes certification by implementing sustainable building methods in its construction. It will also incorporate a variety of ‘green’ features, with which the complex intends to maintain its overarching goal of energy-efficiency and sustainability.
With the construction of this new complex, Dana Strand will contribute a bevy of much-needed affordable housing for Los Angeles’s senior community.
