Sacramento, CA – May 19, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Workers in Sacramento’s retail, service and health care industry are just a few of the new residents who live at Cannery Place Apartments which officially opened today as the first housing development completed at Township Nine in the River District.
“It’s mixed use, mixed income, pedestrian friendly, publicprivate partnership and high density,” said Mayor Kevin Johnson. “We talk about accessibility, walking, pedestrian friendly; this does it with the river to the north and downtown to the south and the river district is making it a reality.”
The $40 million transit oriented development provides 180 one- and two- bedroom units of affordable housing to serve residents with incomes at 30-60 percent of the area median income.
SHRA Executive Director La Shelle Dozier said Cannery Place Apartments serves as an example of what affordable housing should look like and the type of people that really need the housing.
“We have the new arena coming and there will be people who will need to work there and in the retail establishments,” said Dozier. “This is the kind of housing that is inclusive for Sacramento and provides the level of affordability that we need, so we have to make sure that when we look at a community it includes all of the people who need to live and work and play downtown.”
Jerry Berlanga moved in about two months ago and says he’s grateful to be living at Cannery Place.
“I just love it” said Berlanga. “I love the whole environment, how it lights up at night time. I love how the people get along and interact together. I think we’re very blessed here, very blessed.
Cannery Place Apartments at Township Nine was developed in partnership with UrbanCore, LLC and The John Stewart Company. SHRA assisted the project with $4.8 million including $1.8 million HOME investment funds and $3 million in Downtown Low Mod Tax Increment funding prior to the statewide elimination of redevelopment. SHRA also issued $10.6 in tax exempt Mortgage Revenue Bonds for the project which also received over $12 million in Prop 1C Transit Oriented Housing Program funds, and approximately $7 million in Prop 1C Infill Infrastructure Program funds.
A community of 72 townhomes at Township Nine is expected to begin construction this summer.
