Congresswoman Matsui Calls for Solutions at Hearing on Flint Water Crisis

-

Washington, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) issued the following statement at a House Energy & Commerce Committee hearing on the Flint Water Crisis:

“Thank you, Mr. Chairman, for holding this important hearing today. First and foremost, we must do everything we can to support the women, children, and families in Flint affected by this public health crisis.

“Contaminated water and lead poisoning were the end result of a system that failed the people of Flint. But, Flint is far from the only community at risk. Today we need to ask the hard questions and offer real solutions so that the suffering in Flint is not repeated in our cities and towns across the nation.

“A first step is increasing funding for our water infrastructure. This infrastructure must be resilient and sustainable because it will also be an important line of defense as we confront the challenges of a changing climate.

“We also need to ensure that our public health infrastructure is robust, so we can both prevent and respond to crises like those in Flint. This means investments in public health surveillance, prevention and screening, and treatment. I hope today we can hear about ways that we can support our state and local health departments, as well as our Medicaid programs, to prevent and respond to public health crises.”
