Residential:
- Total new housing units in building permits issued for the month of January 2014 totaled 4,948, down 51% from 10,148 units in December of 2013 and down 9% from 5,457 units in January of 2013.
- Single-Family units totaled 2,821, down 20% from 3,558 units in December of 2013 and up 8% from 2,610 units in January of 2013.
- Multi-Family permits decreased by 67% in January 2014 when compared to December 2013, also revealing a 25% decrease when compared to January 2013.
- The dollar volume of residential building totaled $ 1,521,178,226 in January 2014, down 34% from December 2013 and down 7% from the same time last year.
Non-residential:
- Building permits issued in January 2014 for private non-residential building have a total construction value of $ 1,394,108,950, decreasing 10% from December 2013 and by 3% as compared to January 2013.
Large Projects:
The dollar volume of large projects accounts for much of the month-to-month fluctuation in non-residential building. Large projects are defined here as $ 5.0 million or more in construction cost. The largest project in January 2014 was a permit in San Francisco issued for a new $40.6 million, 6-story, office, retail, and parking building with a basement.
