C.W. Driver Completes Construction for $53 Million Student Recreation Center on CSUN Campus
Torrance, CA – April 3, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — C.W. Driver, a premier builder serving the Western United States since 1919, completed construction on the new, 118,000-square-foot Student Recreation Center at California State University, Northridge, (CSUN) in Northridge, Calif. As the construction manager at risk, C.W. Driver focused on building a sustainable and modern facility large enough for the student population, and allowing for better access to resources that promote wellness, physical health and campus involvement. Located centrally on campus and designed to LEED® Gold standards by Irvine-based LPA, Inc., the Student Recreation Center, which opened in January 2012, will serve as a campus gathering place and as a recruitment tool for prospective students.
Built to be an iconic campus facility providing state-of-the-art technology in the areas of health and fitness, the main entry and circulation area of the facility features a multi-story climbing wall and views throughout its glass exteriors. The two-story complex incorporates a three-court gymnasium, a multi-activity-court (MAC), and an 18,500-square-foot weight and fitness space, among other cutting-edge exercise equipment and amenities. On the eastern portion of the structure, C.W. Driver erected a glass façade, which acts as a “human billboard” to advertise activities to the neighboring community.
“We are proud to be a part of such a revolutionary project,” said C.W. Driver senior project manager John Kately. “This recreation center will not only be an inspiration for the CSUN community, but it will also challenge other campuses, architects and builders to think outside the box when looking towards the future of modern design.”
C.W. Driver utilized a variety of sustainable building practices during construction, contributing to the center’s LEED® Gold certification, such as the use of recycled materials, green roof and cool roof systems, and photovoltaic panels to optimize energy performance. Much of the complex’s exterior consists of glass and the lighting system is enhanced by solatubes, allowing 90 percent of the center to benefit from natural light. Additionally, solar panels installed on the roof and a ventilation system that moves air naturally through the building contribute to the building’s energy conservation.
This new facility joins a number of recreation centers C.W. Driver built, which include the student recreation centers at California State University, Fullerton, and California State University, Long Beach, which have achieved LEED® Gold certification; and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, targeting LEED® Gold certification.
Joining Kately on C.W. Driver’s CSUN Student Recreation Center team are Brett Curry, vice president/project executive; Bruce Campbell, senior superintendent; Matt Christensen, assistant project manager; and Judd Burton, assistant project manager.
