House Passes Rep. Peters’ Amendment to Increase Infrastructure Resiliency
Last night, the House passed U.S. Congressman Scott Peters’ (CA-52) amendment to the Water Resources Development Act that gives the Army Corps of Engineers the resources to evaluate the structural health of its current infrastructure and construction projects. By using structural health monitoring, the Army Corps can increase the resiliency of potentially vulnerable infrastructure before a disaster strikes, and be able to more quickly evaluate damage after a disaster. Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) released the following statement regarding President Barack Obama signing into law H.R. 5936, the Los Angeles Homeless Veterans Leasing Act of 2016. The law--authored by Congressman Lieu and Congressman Jeff Miller--authorizes the VA Secretary to enter into leases at the West Los Angeles VA to provide for permanent supportive housing and services including legal representation, spiritual enrichment, vocational training, addiction treatment and recreational opportunities.

REP. LIEU INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO GIVE HOMELESS VETERANS ACCESS TO LEGAL SERVICES
Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D | Los Angeles County) introduced the Legal Services for Homeless Veterans Act of 2016. This legislation would authorize the Department of Veterans Affairs to enter into agreements with third parties to provide pro bono legal services to homeless and at-risk Veterans across the country. A recent study by the VA found that at least five out of the top 10 problems leading to homelessness among Veterans cannot be solved without legal help.

Accountant, Co-Defendant Plead to Embezzling From County Foster Homes
A Long Beach accountant pleaded guilty today to embezzling money from several county foster homes, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Gary Batchelor, 64, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of misappropriation of public funds and one felony count of filing a false tax return in two separate cases. The group homes were operated by You Are the Difference Foundation and Moore’s Cottage. They were located in Compton, Los Angeles, Altadena and Pomona and served boys ages 13 to 18.
