SAN BERNARDINO, CA – December 28, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — San Bernardino County Assessor Dennis Draeger announced today that property tax relief will be available for victims of last week’s devastating floods that have ravaged San Bernardino County. According to news reports, many structures have either been destroyed or suffered extensive damage as a result of flooding in many areas of San Bernardino County.
“The flood damage that I have surveyed has caused incredible damage to homes in San Bernardino County,” stated Assessor Draeger after inspecting the flood damage in Highland with Chief Appraiser Dan Harp. “I know that properties have been damaged in communities all over the County. My office will take all measures afforded me by law to provide property assessment relief for property owners that have suffered damaged to their homes and businesses.” On Monday, December 27, Draeger directed staff to contact cities and other emergency services offices to speed the identification of damaged properties and begin site visits to determine levels of damage.
Under California Revenue and Taxation Code 170/Misfortune and Calamity, a property owner is entitled to reassessment of property where damage has exceeded $10,000. This important exemption should be filed as quickly as possible.
Assessor Draeger has added to the Assessor Office’s internet site a special link for victims of the disaster with necessary forms to claim an exemption under the tax code’s appropriate provisions. For more information, Assessor Draeger encouraged flood victims to visit his website, www.sbcounty.gov/assessor or call his office toll-free at 1-877-885-7654.
