September 22, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced that the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) awarded $42.7 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) funding from the federal Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) to 31 agencies and local governments in California. The funding is federally designated to provide short and medium-term rental assistance to individuals and families who are currently in housing but at risk of becoming homeless, and to individuals and families who are homeless. This HPRP funding allocation is the largest state allocation in the U.S. to date. In total, entities in California have received $189.1 million in HPRP funds, with some cities and counties receiving funding directly from the federal government.
“My administration is working around the clock with the federal government to pump Recovery funding into California quickly, responsibly and in this instance, to provide assistance to individuals and families in California facing homelessness,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “This funding will boost efforts helping those who find themselves on the edge of homelessness and add support for the homeless – and it couldn’t have come at a better time thanks to President Obama’s Recovery Act.”
Used for federally defined purposes, these Recovery funds will provide financial assistance and other services intended to help people and families find stable housing. These uses include short- or medium-term rental assistance, housing relocation and stabilization services including housing search, mediation or outreach to property owners, credit repair, security or utility deposits, utility payments, rental assistance, moving cost assistance and other homelessness prevention or rapid re-housing activities.
