HOMEOWNERSHIP INCREASES UPWARD ECONOMIC MOBILITY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – December 09, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) is fighting for low-income and middle-class Americans to have the opportunity to own their own home, provide a safe haven for family, and build wealth.

Congresswoman Sanchez, speaking from the House floor, highlighted the importance of homeownership to increase upward economic mobility.

“Owning your own home for almost everybody in our country is the first rung of the ladder of wealth creation,” said Rep. Sanchez. “And yet today, that dream—and it is a dream for many of our citizens, particularly those in the Latino and minority communities—-is just that: a dream.”

For Americans in the bottom 40% percent of annual income level, wealth creation is almost exclusively generated through homeownership. For middle-class Americans, 62% of the median homeowner’s assets and 42% of their total wealth comes from their home.

Rep. Sanchez added, “Homeownership is a key to creating stable, economically successful households and to provide security for existing and future generations.”

Congresswoman Sanchez was joined by her colleagues, Rep. Linda Sanchez and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, in addition to former Governor Luis Fortuño, industry leaders and community activists.
