The American Craftsman house was designed by IS Architecture of La Jolla, Calif., and built by Hill Construction Company of San Diego.
Located in the Mission Hills community, one of the oldest and best architecturally preserved neighborhoods in San Diego, the American Craftsman home was designed and built to fit seamlessly into the homes around it, like it has always belonged.
Design emphasis was placed on period-correct details like leaded windows, fumed oak casework and antique fireplace surrounds. The interiors are grand but warm and welcoming, a perfect place for the retired owners to host their family and friends.
The home was also custom designed with aging-in-place in mind, making a transition to full-time ground floor living effortless.
“This is a great example of how a beautiful home perfectly suited for entertaining, can also be designed to allow the owners to enjoy it for many, many years to come,” said 2013 BALA Judge Chairman Victor Mirontschuk, president of EDI International in New York City. “The design detail that went into recapturing the charm of the home’s original era is amazing.”
In its 30th year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international, based on the principle that good design is not and should not be limited to high-priced and/or custom homes. Even the simplest, most affordable homes can receive an award if they showcase good design.
Award winners were announced during the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
