Statement by Congressman John Garamendi on King v. Burwell Supreme Court Case on Affordable Care Act Subsidies

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 26, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA), who served as California’s elected Insurance Commissioner for eight years, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in the case of King v. Burwell:

“The Supreme Court did the commonsense thing in upholding Affordable Care Act subsidies for people insured through the federal exchange. Today’s decision is a relief: If the Court had ruled the other way, nearly 10 million hardworking Americans might have lost their health insurance.”

“The Affordable Care Act has now survived two Supreme Court challenges and 60 repeal votes. It is time for the law’s opponents to focus on improving our health care system, rather than undermining a law that has helped approximately 16.4 million Americans, including around two million Californians, access affordable, quality health insurance coverage. Unfortunately, the Republican Congress has already renewed its efforts to defund implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which will further threaten the low-cost health insurance millions are receiving on account of the law.”
