Congresswoman Laura Richardson Announces that HUD is Set to Provide $6.15 Million to Combat Homelessness and Provide Related Veterans Assistance and Childcare in Long Beach

WASHINGTON, DC - January 12, 2010 - (RealEstateRama) — With the dramatic increase in homeless families caused by the current economic downturn affecting California and the nation, Congresswoman Laura Richardson is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is providing $6,152,772 to the City of Long Beach for preventing and decreasing homelessness.

“With unemployment hitting its highest rate in more than two decades, thousands of families in Long Beach are at risk of losing their homes simply because the jobs do not currently exist to allow them to make ends meet,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “For the past several years, Long Beach has documented the homeless in the city, an estimated 3,909 in 2009, and their plight. This HUD funding allows the city to provide a vital safety net so that friends, neighbors and families are not left to spiral into homelessness, which is often an endless cycle for them and the estimated more than 450 children. In addition, this funding improves the ability for our veterans to maintain stable living standards and it provides childcare assistance, giving parents the ability to work without having to worry about the safety of their children.”

The HUD funds are being distributed through its Continuum of Care programs, with the money going to Long Beach designated for specific supportive housing and shelter plus care programs. In addition to childcare assistance, veterans support and permanent and transitional housing programs, the designated programs include domestic violence shelters, job placement, healthcare and life skills training.

“As the economy slightly improves, we know that the threat of homelessness for Long Beach families has not lessened.” Congresswoman Richardson added. “But until the time of recovery, it is vital we act to support those in need and provide them the basic resources they need to get back on their feet and off the streets.”

Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook and Signal Hill.
